Description Brown leather covered document box decorated with contrasting shaped metal plates on either side at the top (matte finish) and on the front (shiny silver-colored finish). The front and top of the box and decorative plates are outlined with closely spaced brass-headed tacks; on the sides of the front and top of the box the tacks are applied over narrow leather strips. An applied leather flap wraps around the front and sides of the lid and is held in place with brass tacks. A bail handle with round escutcheons is fastened to the top. A square box lock is inserted into the front. The shaped keyhole cover has an impressed "EW" over an eagle with outstretched wings. The leather cover on the back of the box turns a self-hinge. The lid is further secured to the top with three leather strap hinges, each fastened with two tacks. The bottom and interior of the box are lined with blue printed paper in two different patterns.
