Description Square-format sampler worked in tent, satin, cross and other stitches, having 4 alphabets (3 uc, 1 lc) in different styles and numbers 1-12 over a rectangular tablet containing a verse flanked by a man and woman and “Frances A. Whidden, aged 13 years, her work/under the tuition of E. Robinson, Portsmouth”; on either side of the tablet is a pyramid of fruit in a footed bowl; the lower third of the sampler has a church in the llc and a tree and giraffe(?) in the lrc; in the middle is a fenced-in graveyard with two tombstones, a gate and two willows; over each tree is an inward-facing angel poised in flight and two memorial inscriptions: “In memory of /Anne Seavey,/who died/Nov. 14th. 1826./Aged 76 yrs”; and “In memory of/William Seavey,/who died March 15 1829./ Aged 84 yrs”; center bottom: “After death/comes the/Judgement”; with image of Bible and “Holy Bible” above; the sampler is surrounded on three sides by a stylized flower border having diamond-shaped leaves and pale pink or tan 4-petalled flowers with yellow centers
