Object Name Sampler

Description Sampler worked in polychrome silk thread in cross stitch on plain open weave linen ground fabric. Floral vine border on all four sides and center panel is divided into three sections. Top contains two alphabets and a set of numerals. Center contains one alphabet and the signature "Martha Nutter/ Her Sampler Aged 10. 1800" Date extends beyond the right side and interrupts the border. Bottom section contains the motto: "The industrious girl since/ such are found so scarce / deservs her picture/ and a living verse." Small tree and an animal are embroidered at right bottom corner. All four edges turned under and hemstitched.
